When B12 injection makes sense

Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is essential for healthy blood cells, nerve function, and DNA synthesis. Deficiency is more common than people realise — particularly in older adults, vegetarians/vegans, and people with absorption issues like pernicious anaemia.

When B12 levels are low, oral supplements often aren't enough — particularly for those with absorption issues. B12 injections deliver the vitamin directly into muscle for reliable uptake. We offer both maintenance schedules for diagnosed deficiency and one-off boosters.

Common questions

Do I need a blood test first?
If you're seeking maintenance for diagnosed deficiency, no. If you're wondering whether you're deficient, we can either refer you to your GP for a blood test or, in some cases, discuss self-funded testing options.
How often should I have injections?
That depends on the reason. Maintenance for pernicious anaemia is typically every 3 months. Initial loading doses for new deficiency are usually weekly for several weeks. We'll advise on the schedule that suits you.
Are there side-effects?
Most patients tolerate B12 injections very well. Common minor side-effects include arm soreness and occasional flushing. Serious reactions are rare.
Can I get B12 from food instead?
Yes — B12 is found in meat, fish, dairy, and eggs. But for people with absorption issues or strict plant-based diets, food-based intake may not be enough. Your pharmacist can advise.
Will the energy boost be real or placebo?
If you're genuinely deficient, correcting B12 levels typically improves energy, mood, and cognitive symptoms. If you're not deficient, the ‘boost’ from extra B12 is likely modest at best.
