Free contraception from a Blackburn NHS pharmacy

The NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service is a national free service that allows community pharmacists to initiate and provide ongoing supply of the contraceptive pill. It removes the need to book a GP appointment every time your prescription needs renewing — freeing up GP time and making it easier for you to manage your contraception locally.

At Curo Pharmacy in Blackburn, our pharmacist will review your medical history, take your blood pressure, and discuss any side-effects or changes in your circumstances at each visit — exactly the same checks you'd receive at your GP surgery. The consultation is free, confidential, and walk-in.

Whether you're already on the pill and need a fresh supply, or you've never used contraception before and want to discuss starting, our pharmacist can help you on the day.

What's included & eligibility

The NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service has specific clinical criteria. Your pharmacist will assess your suitability at your first appointment.

  • Ongoing supply of progestogen-only pills (mini pill)

  • Contraception for women with specific medical contraindications

Where to get free contraception in Blackburn

If you live in Blackburn, Darwen, or the surrounding East Lancashire area, there are three main routes to access free NHS contraception. Each is good for different situations — here's how they compare:

Contraceptive pills available through this service

Following a clinical assessment, our pharmacist can supply the following types of NHS contraceptive pills under this service. The right choice depends on your medical history, what's worked for you in the past, and your current circumstances.

Combined oral contraceptive pills (COCP)

Contain a combination of ethinylestradiol (oestrogen) and a progestogen:

  • Ethinylestradiol + levonorgestrel: Microgynon 30, Rigevidon, Levest, Maexeni
  • Ethinylestradiol + desogestrel: Marvelon, Mercilon, Gedarel
  • Ethinylestradiol + drospirenone: Yasmin, Lucette, Eloine, Drovelis
  • Ethinylestradiol + gestodene: Femodene, Katya, Akizza, Millinette
  • Ethinylestradiol + norethisterone: Loestrin 20/30, Norimin
  • Other clinically appropriate combined pills

Progestogen-only pills (POP / mini pill)

Contain only a progestogen — suitable for many women who can't take oestrogen:

  • Desogestrel 75 mcg: Cerelle, Cerazette, Aizea, Zelleta, Feanolla
  • Norethisterone 350 mcg: Noriday
  • Levonorgestrel 30 mcg: Norgeston
  • Other clinically appropriate mini pills
Pill availability is always subject to clinical suitability and pharmacy stock. Your pharmacist will discuss which options are most appropriate for you — including the difference between combined pills (containing oestrogen + progestogen) and progestogen-only pills like the popular desogestrel-only pill.

Contraception Service FAQs

Can I get the contraceptive pill for free in Blackburn?
Yes. The contraceptive pill is free on the NHS for all eligible patients in England. In Blackburn you can access it through participating community pharmacies like Curo Pharmacy (via the NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service), through your GP surgery, or through Brook Blackburn. Standard NHS prescription charges apply to the pill itself unless you are exempt.
Where can I get free contraception in Blackburn?
There are three main routes: (1) a community pharmacy offering the NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service (like Curo Pharmacy on Haslingden Road) — fastest for the pill; (2) your GP surgery — comprehensive options including all contraceptive methods; (3) Brook Blackburn sexual health clinic — best for LARC (coils, implants, injections), STI testing, and under-16s.
How do I get the pill without seeing a GP?
Through the NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service. Walk in to Curo Pharmacy during opening hours. Our pharmacist will assess your suitability following NHS clinical guidelines and, where appropriate, supply your pill on the spot — no prescription from a GP needed.
Is there an age limit for the NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service?
The NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service is generally available for women aged 16 and over. If you're under 16, we'd recommend visiting Brook Blackburn — they specialise in confidential sexual health for young people of all ages.
Do I need to switch from my GP?
No. You don't need to formally switch — but most patients find it more convenient to manage their contraception through us once they've started. Your GP record stays exactly as it is.
Is the service confidential?
Yes — all consultations are completely confidential and take place in our private consultation room. With your consent, a summary is shared with your GP to keep your medical record accurate.
What if I've never been on the pill before?
Depending on your medical history and risk factors, our pharmacist may be able to initiate contraception for you. If your situation is more complex, we'll refer you to your GP or a sexual health clinic.
How often do I need to come in?
Typically every 6 to 12 months for routine reviews. Some patients may need more frequent reviews depending on their medical history.
Is there any cost?
The consultation is free on the NHS. NHS prescription charges apply to the contraception itself unless you are exempt.
What is desogestrel and is it available on the NHS?
Desogestrel is a progestogen-only contraceptive (a "mini pill"). It's the active ingredient in popular brands like Cerelle, Cerazette, Aizea, Zelleta and Feanolla. Yes — it is available free on the NHS through this service, subject to clinical suitability. Desogestrel-only pills are also available to buy over the counter from pharmacies under different rules, but the NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service makes them free rather than paid.
What's the difference between the combined pill and the mini pill?
The combined oral contraceptive pill (COCP) contains two hormones — oestrogen (ethinylestradiol) plus a progestogen (such as levonorgestrel, desogestrel, drospirenone or gestodene). The progestogen-only pill (POP / mini pill) contains only a progestogen and no oestrogen. The mini pill is often recommended for women who can't take oestrogen — including breastfeeding mothers, women over 35 who smoke, or those with a history of migraine with aura. Your pharmacist will help you decide which suits you best.
I need emergency contraception (the morning-after pill) — can I get it here?
Yes — Curo Pharmacy offers a separate emergency contraception service for the morning-after pill (levonorgestrel / Levonelle for up to 72 hours, or ulipristal acetate / ellaOne for up to 120 hours after unprotected sex). This is a private service, not part of the NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service. The sooner you take it, the more effective it is — don't delay.
