Why check your cholesterol?

High cholesterol typically has no symptoms but is a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular conditions. NHS guidance recommends adults check their cholesterol periodically — particularly if you have a family history, you're over 40, you're overweight, or you have other cardiovascular risk factors.

Our finger-prick test gives you accurate results in minutes — including total cholesterol, HDL (good cholesterol), LDL (bad cholesterol) and your overall ratio. We'll explain what your numbers mean and recommend next steps.

Who is this service for?

Cholesterol screening is suitable for most adults. Some patients with existing diagnoses or on lipid medication may be better served by GP-managed testing.

Suitable for

  • Adults wanting a baseline cholesterol check
  • Patients with a family history of high cholesterol or heart disease
  • Those wanting to track the impact of lifestyle changes
  • Patients ineligible for free NHS health checks
  • Adults monitoring their cardiovascular risk

Not suitable for

  • Patients already on lipid-lowering medication — your GP will manage monitoring
  • Children (we'd recommend GP referral)
  • Acute symptoms suggesting cardiovascular emergency — call 999
  • Patients with red-flag symptoms or complex medical needs — we will refer to GP

What to expect

A finger-prick test is quick and uses just a drop of blood. You don't need to fast (though fasting gives slightly more accurate LDL results — we'll discuss this when you book).

Common questions

Do I need to fast?
For a basic total cholesterol check, no — you don't need to fast. For the most accurate LDL reading, we'd recommend fasting (water only) for 9-12 hours before the test. We'll advise you when you book.
What do the numbers mean?
We'll explain in detail — but broadly, lower total cholesterol and LDL is better, higher HDL is better, and the ratio between the two matters. We'll give you written results with reference ranges.
What if my cholesterol is high?
We'll discuss lifestyle modifications you can try (diet, exercise, weight), advise on next steps, and where appropriate refer you to your GP for further investigation and potential treatment.
How often should I check?
If your result is normal, every 3-5 years is generally adequate. If it's borderline or high, we'd recommend annual checks or as your GP advises.
Will my GP get the result?
With your consent, yes — we'll provide a written copy of your result that you can share, and we can communicate with your GP if anything needs follow-up.
