Why microsuction is the gold standard

Earwax (cerumen) is normal and protective — but excess build-up can cause hearing loss, discomfort, tinnitus, and dizziness. Microsuction uses a gentle, low-pressure vacuum to remove wax under direct vision using a microscope or magnification loupes.

Unlike old-fashioned ear syringing or irrigation, microsuction doesn't introduce water into the ear canal and is suitable for patients with perforated eardrums, grommets, or a history of ear surgery. It's quick, comfortable, and effective.

Microsuction is suitable for most adults experiencing wax build-up, including those who cannot have other forms of wax removal.

Does it hurt?

Microsuction is generally painless. You'll hear a vacuum sound which can feel loud, but there's no significant discomfort.

Do I need olive oil drops first?

For best results, we usually recommend using olive oil or sodium bicarbonate drops in the affected ear(s) for 3-5 days before your appointment. This softens hardened wax and makes removal easier and faster.

How long does it last?

That depends on how quickly your body produces wax. Some patients only need treatment every few years; others (particularly hearing aid users) may need annual treatment.

Can both ears be done?

Yes — both ears are usually treated in the same appointment if both are affected.

Is it safe with a perforated eardrum?

Yes — that's one of the main advantages of microsuction over water-based methods. Tell your pharmacist about any history of perforation or surgery and we'll take extra care.
