When you suspect strep throat

Most sore throats are caused by viruses and resolve on their own. But Group A streptococcus (‘strep A’) is a bacterial cause that can be more serious — particularly in young children — and benefits from prompt antibiotic treatment when diagnosed.

Our rapid Strep A test uses a quick throat swab and provides a result within minutes. Combined with a clinical assessment, this lets us recommend the appropriate next step — whether that's reassurance, supportive care, or referral for antibiotic treatment.

Who is this service for?

Strep A testing is suitable for most adults and children with a sore throat where strep is a concern.

Suitable for

  • Adults and children with sore throat symptoms
  • Particularly useful where strep A is suspected (sudden onset, fever, no cough)
  • Patients who've been exposed to confirmed strep A in family/school
  • Rapid testing with same-visit result
  • Onward referral to GP if positive (for antibiotic prescription)

Not suitable for

  • Severe symptoms requiring immediate hospital care (call 999 if breathing difficulties)
  • Confirmed strep A in the recent past — usually requires GP review
  • Patients seeking guaranteed antibiotic prescription (we test, GP prescribes)
  • Long-standing or recurrent throat symptoms — see GP
  • Patients with red-flag symptoms or complex medical needs — we will refer to GP

Common questions

Is the rapid Strep A test accurate?
Modern rapid antigen tests for Strep A are highly accurate — typically 90%+ sensitivity and 95%+ specificity. A positive test reliably indicates strep A; a negative test in someone with classic symptoms might warrant a follow-up throat swab.
Can you prescribe antibiotics if positive?
Pharmacy First (NHS) handles sore throat consultations including potential antibiotic provision through a separate national pathway. Our private rapid test is purely diagnostic — if positive and antibiotics are clinically appropriate, we'll refer you for the prescription via the NHS pathway or your GP.
Do I need this if it's probably just a cold?
Most sore throats are viral and don't need a test. If symptoms are mild and you're otherwise well, testing isn't routinely needed. If symptoms are severe, sudden, or particularly affecting children, testing helps inform appropriate care.
How much does the test cost?
Please call us on 01254 660473 for current pricing.
Can children have the test?
Yes — children can be tested with parental consent. Strep A is most common and most clinically relevant in children aged 5-15.
