Why have your blood pressure checked?

High blood pressure (hypertension) often has no symptoms but is a leading risk factor for heart attack, stroke and kidney disease. The NHS Hypertension Case-Finding Service makes it easy to get a free check from your local pharmacy — no GP appointment, no waiting list.

If your reading is elevated, your pharmacist may offer a second confirmatory check, refer you to your GP, or — where clinically appropriate — arrange a 24-hour ambulatory monitoring follow-up.

The NHS Blood Pressure Check service has clear eligibility criteria set by the NHS Community Pharmacy Contractual Framework.

Blood Pressure Checks FAQs

Is this service really free?
Yes — the NHS Blood Pressure Check is completely free for eligible adults. You don't pay anything at any stage.
How often should I get checked?
NHS guidance recommends adults aged 40+ have a blood pressure check at least every 5 years. If you have a family history of hypertension or other risk factors, more frequent checks may be advisable.
What if my reading is high?
A single high reading does not necessarily mean you have hypertension. Your pharmacist may invite you back for a second check on a different day or refer you to your GP for further investigation if appropriate.
Do I need to register with Curo Pharmacy first?
No. You don't need to be a regular patient or have a nominated pharmacy. Just walk in during opening hours.
Should I prepare for the check?
Try to avoid caffeine, alcohol, exercise and smoking for at least 30 minutes before your check, as these can temporarily raise your reading. Otherwise, no preparation is needed.
