About the New Medicines Service (NMS)

Starting a new long-term medication can be a lot to take in — what to expect, when to take it, what to do if you miss a dose, and how to manage any side-effects. The NHS New Medicines Service was designed to address that.

The service includes two follow-up consultations with your pharmacist after starting a qualifying new medication: one between 7 and 14 days after starting, and another between 14 and 21 days after the first follow-up. It's completely free.

How it works

Starting a new medicine in three steps

Started a new medicine for a long-term condition? The free NHS New Medicine Service helps you get it right from day one.

Step 1

1. You start

When you collect a newly prescribed medicine for an eligible condition, we'll offer to enrol you — it takes a minute and costs nothing.

  • Free NHS service
  • Eligible long-term conditions
  • Enrolment takes a minute
Step 2

2. We check in

A follow-up chat around week two — how's it going, any side effects, any questions? Most problems are easy to fix early.

  • Follow-up at ~2 weeks
  • Side effects talked through
  • By phone or in person
Step 3

3. You're confident

A final review around week four to make sure everything's settled — with your GP looped in if anything needs adjusting.

  • Final review at ~4 weeks
  • GP looped in if needed
  • Medicine working as it should

New Medicines Service FAQs

Is the New Medicines Service free?
Yes — completely free on the NHS. There's no charge for the consultations, just standard NHS prescription charges (if applicable) for the medication itself.
How do I get referred to NMS?
When you collect a new prescription for a qualifying medication, ask your pharmacist about NMS. If you're eligible and you'd like to take part, we'll book the follow-up consultations for you.
What if I'm having problems with the medication?
That's exactly what NMS is for. Your pharmacist can discuss side-effects, dose timing, interactions, and — where appropriate — liaise with your GP about adjusting the treatment.
Can the consultations be over the phone?
Yes — telephone consultations are available where face-to-face isn't practical. Just let your pharmacist know what works best for you.
Do I need to be a regular Curo customer?
No. You can have your NMS consultation with us even if your prescription was filled at another pharmacy — though it's often easier to do everything in one place.
