About the NHS RSV Vaccination Programme

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a common respiratory infection that's usually mild in healthy adults — but can be serious in older adults and very young babies. RSV is a leading cause of hospital admissions for respiratory infection in both groups.

The NHS RSV vaccination programme launched in autumn 2024. It's a single dose that provides lasting protection. The programme targets adults aged 75-79 (a one-off catch-up) and pregnant women from 28 weeks (to protect newborns).

What's included & eligibility

NHS RSV vaccination eligibility:

Included / eligible

  • Adults aged 75 to 79 (one-off vaccination — no annual booster needed)
  • Adults who turn 75 during the programme year
  • Pregnant women from 28 weeks of pregnancy onwards
  • A "catch-up" cohort for adults aged 80 and over is being rolled out in some areas

Not included / not eligible

  • Adults under 75 outside of pregnancy
  • Children (currently — infant RSV protection is provided through maternal vaccination or other NHS programmes)
  • Individuals with confirmed severe allergic reactions to vaccine components

In most cases yes — the RSV vaccine can be given alongside flu and COVID vaccines. Your pharmacist will assess your individual situation.
I'm pregnant — when should I have it?
