Understanding why hair is thinning

Hair loss can be distressing, but for most people it's treatable. The most common cause is androgenetic alopecia (male or female pattern hair loss) — but other causes include stress, nutritional deficiencies, hormonal changes, and certain medical conditions.

Our consultation explores what's causing your hair loss and what realistic treatment options exist. For pattern hair loss, evidence-based treatments include topical minoxidil and (in men) oral finasteride. We can prescribe both where clinically appropriate.

Who is this service for?

Most adults with pattern hair loss can be helped. Some hair loss patterns warrant GP investigation first.

  • Suspected alopecia areata or other autoimmune causes

Common questions

How effective is treatment?
Topical minoxidil and oral finasteride are both evidence-based with significant proportions of users seeing improvement within 3-6 months. Realistic results are slowing of further loss and modest regrowth — not a full return to teenage hair density.
Are treatments lifelong?
To maintain results, yes — both minoxidil and finasteride need ongoing use. Stopping causes return to the pre-treatment trajectory within months.
What about side-effects of finasteride?
Most men tolerate finasteride well. A small minority experience changes in libido or mood. Your pharmacist will discuss the evidence and your individual risk profile.
Can women take finasteride?
Generally no — finasteride is not recommended for pre-menopausal women and is unsafe during pregnancy. Women are typically offered minoxidil and lifestyle interventions.
What about hair transplants?
We don't provide hair transplant services. If that's an avenue you're considering, we can discuss what realistic expectations look like, but you'll need a specialist clinic for the procedure itself.
