Two types of blood pressure monitoring

Blood pressure varies throughout the day, and a single reading in a clinic can be misleading. We offer two private blood pressure services to give you accurate, useful data:

Standard BP check: A one-off measurement using a validated upper-arm device in our consultation room, with clinical interpretation and advice. Useful for patients who aren't eligible for the free NHS check, those who want a check between reviews, or those checking the impact of a new medication.

24-hour Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM): You wear a small device that takes readings automatically throughout 24 hours. This is the gold standard for diagnosing hypertension and for ruling out ‘white coat’ effects. You'll receive a detailed report including average daytime, nighttime, and overall readings.

Who is this service for?

Both services are open to most adults. ABPM in particular is recommended by NICE for accurate hypertension diagnosis.

Suitable for

  • Adults wanting a one-off private blood pressure check
  • Patients ineligible for the NHS BP check service
  • Adults wanting an accurate hypertension diagnosis (ABPM)
  • Patients investigating ‘white coat’ or borderline readings
  • Those monitoring response to a new BP medication
  • Detailed written report you can share with your GP

Not suitable for

  • Patients with very irregular heart rhythms (ABPM accuracy reduced)
  • Children — we'd recommend referral to your GP
  • Acute or severe symptoms — call 999
  • Patients with red-flag symptoms or complex medical needs — we will refer to GP

What to expect

Standard checks take about 10 minutes. ABPM involves wearing a device for 24 hours — fitted in our consultation room and returned the next day.

Common questions

What's the difference between standard BP and ABPM?
Standard BP gives one reading at one moment. ABPM takes ~40 readings over 24 hours (including overnight), giving a much more accurate picture of your typical blood pressure. ABPM is the diagnostic gold standard.
How much does ABPM cost?
Pricing varies — please call us on 01254 660473 for current rates. ABPM is more expensive than a standard check because of the device usage, fitting, and detailed analysis.
Will the device be uncomfortable to wear?
The device is compact and worn on a belt with the cuff on your upper arm. It inflates every 30-60 minutes (less often at night). Most patients sleep through it.
Can I shower with the device?
No — the device shouldn't be submerged or get wet. You'll need to skip your shower or bath during the 24 hours, or remove the device briefly (we'll explain how).
Do you send the report to my GP?
With your consent, yes — we'll send a copy of your ABPM report to your GP so they can update your medical record and act on the findings.
