Why an HbA1c test?

HbA1c (glycated haemoglobin) gives an average picture of your blood sugar levels over the past 2-3 months. It's the gold-standard screening test for type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes, and is also used to monitor blood sugar control in people who already have diabetes.

Our private HbA1c test uses a small finger-prick blood sample. You don't need to fast. Results are typically available the same day, with expert interpretation and lifestyle advice.

Common questions

Do I need to fast for the test?
No — HbA1c doesn't require fasting. You can eat and drink normally before the test.
What do the results mean?
Normal: below 42 mmol/mol (6.0%). Pre-diabetes: 42-47 mmol/mol (6.0-6.4%). Diabetes range: 48 mmol/mol (6.5%) or higher. We'll discuss what your specific result means for you.
What if my result suggests diabetes?
A single high HbA1c indicates further investigation is needed. We'll refer you to your GP for confirmation and to start any necessary treatment. Don't panic — early diagnosis means better long-term outcomes.
Can the test detect type 1 diabetes?
HbA1c can identify high blood sugar from any cause but is most commonly used for type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed based on symptoms and other tests — see your GP urgently if you have type 1 symptoms.
How often should I be tested?
If you're at higher risk, annually. For lower-risk adults, every 3 years is typically adequate. Your pharmacist can advise based on your individual situation.
