Acting quickly matters

Emergency contraception (often called the morning-after pill) is most effective the sooner you take it after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure. There are two main options, each with a different active drug and time window:

  • Levonelle contains levonorgestrel 1.5 mg — effective up to 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected sex. Sometimes called the "3-day pill".
  • ellaOne contains ulipristal acetate 30 mg — effective up to 120 hours (5 days) after. Often more effective overall.

Our private consultation is quick, discreet, and judgement-free. You'll be seen by a qualified pharmacist in our consultation room, and where clinically appropriate the medication is dispensed on the spot.

Common questions

Which is better — Levonelle (levonorgestrel) or ellaOne (ulipristal acetate)?
ellaOne (ulipristal acetate 30 mg) is more effective overall and works for longer — up to 120 hours after unprotected sex versus 72 hours for Levonelle (levonorgestrel 1.5 mg). Your pharmacist will discuss which is most appropriate based on timing, your current medications (some interact with ulipristal acetate), your weight, and your individual situation.
How long do I have to take emergency contraception?
Levonorgestrel (Levonelle) works up to 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected sex. Ulipristal acetate (ellaOne) works up to 120 hours (5 days). The sooner you take either, the more effective it is — don't delay.
What's the difference between Levonelle and ellaOne?
They contain different drugs and work slightly differently. Levonelle contains levonorgestrel (a progestogen) and works by delaying or stopping ovulation — effective up to 72 hours. ellaOne contains ulipristal acetate (a selective progesterone receptor modulator) which is effective up to 120 hours and may still work even closer to ovulation. ellaOne is generally more effective overall, particularly later in the window.
Is it really confidential?
Yes — emergency contraception consultations are completely confidential. Your GP isn't routinely informed unless you ask us to or clinical urgency requires it.
Is there an age limit?
Emergency contraception is available to women aged 16 and over without parental consent. Under 16 we'd recommend a sexual health clinic that specialises in young people.
Will I have side effects?
Most women have no significant side-effects. Some experience temporary nausea, headache, or breast tenderness. Your next period may be slightly earlier or later than expected.
