When acid reflux needs more than antacids

Acid reflux (often called heartburn or GORD — gastro-oesophageal reflux disease) is one of the most common reasons people seek pharmacy advice. For most, OTC treatments help — but when symptoms are frequent, severe, or persistent, you need a clinical conversation, not just another box of antacids.

Our pharmacist will discuss your symptoms in detail, review trigger factors, and where clinically appropriate provide a short course of prescription-strength treatment. We'll also identify any ‘red flag’ symptoms that warrant onward referral.

Who is this service for?

Most adults with reflux symptoms can be helped at our clinic. Some symptoms require GP or hospital review instead.

Suitable for

  • Adults with typical reflux/heartburn symptoms
  • Patients who haven't responded to standard OTC treatments
  • Lifestyle advice around triggers, diet, and posture
  • Short courses of prescription-strength PPIs where clinically appropriate
  • Onward referral if symptoms suggest a more serious cause

Not suitable for

  • Unintentional weight loss, difficulty swallowing, or vomiting blood — see GP immediately
  • Severe or worsening chest pain — call 999
  • Patients under 18 (refer to GP)
  • Long-term repeat prescriptions (we recommend GP-managed care for chronic management)
  • Patients with red-flag symptoms or complex medical needs — we will refer to GP

Common questions

What treatments can you offer?
Depending on your history and symptoms, options include lifestyle advice, OTC remedies, or short courses of prescription-strength PPIs (proton pump inhibitors) such as omeprazole.
Will you prescribe medication?
Where clinically appropriate, yes. Our pharmacist will assess your symptoms and may issue a private prescription. Some patients will be better served with a referral to their GP for ongoing care.
What's the cost?
Pricing varies depending on the consultation and any medication issued. Please call us on 01254 660473 to discuss specifics.
When should I see my GP instead?
If you have red flag symptoms — weight loss, difficulty swallowing, vomiting blood, persistent symptoms lasting weeks despite treatment, or symptoms starting after age 55 — see your GP rather than us.
