New NHS MenB vaccine for students: what parents and freshers need to know

Published 24 June 2026 · Reviewed by the pharmacist team at Curo Pharmacy, Blackburn

The key facts

  • A new one-off NHS MenB (meningitis B) vaccination service runs from 20 July 2026 to 31 March 2027
  • It's for Year 13 school leavers and first-year university and college students under 25 moving into shared accommodation
  • Two doses of the 4CMenB vaccine (Bexsero), given at least 28 days apart — completely free on the NHS
  • Your first dose must be given before 31 December 2026 — so it's best to start before you move away
  • Available at community pharmacies including Curo Pharmacy — no GP appointment needed

If you're heading to university or college this autumn — or you're a parent of someone who is — there's an important new vaccination you should know about. The NHS has introduced a one-off meningitis B vaccination programme for students, and for the first time it's being delivered through community pharmacies, making it far easier to access than waiting for a GP appointment.

Here's what it is, who it's for, and why the timing matters.

Why now? The 2026 outbreak

This new service was introduced in response to a significant rise in meningococcal B cases in the UK, including a notably large outbreak earlier in 2026. Meningococcal disease — which can cause meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain) and septicaemia (blood poisoning) — is rare, but it can develop with frightening speed and be life-threatening within hours.

Students are particularly vulnerable. Moving into halls and shared accommodation brings lots of young people into close contact for the first time, and cases reliably peak in October and November — right at the start of the academic year. Vaccinating students before they arrive is the single most effective way to reduce that risk.

Who is eligible?

The programme is aimed at two main groups:

It's not for postgraduates, students who aren't in their first year, or anyone who has already completed a two-dose MenB course in the last five years. If you're unsure, your pharmacist can check your eligibility for you.

What does it involve?

The vaccine used is 4CMenB, brand name Bexsero — the same well-established vaccine given to babies on the routine NHS schedule. Students need two doses, at least 28 days apart, for full protection.

Because of that 28-day gap and the 31 December 2026 deadline for first doses, the advice is simple: don't leave it to the last minute. Getting your first dose over the summer — before you move away for term — means you can fit both doses in comfortably and be protected when the riskiest months arrive.

Where can I get it?

One of the best things about this programme is how easy it is to access. You don't need to wait for a GP appointment — eligible students can simply walk into a participating community pharmacy. The NHS may also contact eligible students directly through the NHS App, text, email or letter.

At Curo Pharmacy in Blackburn, we're offering the full two-dose service in our private consultation room, administered by trained vaccinators. You can walk in during opening hours or call ahead to arrange a convenient time.

Know the signs of meningitis — even after vaccination. No vaccine protects against every type of meningitis, so it's vital to stay alert. Warning signs include a high fever, severe headache, a stiff neck, dislike of bright lights, confusion, cold hands and feet, and a rash that doesn't fade when pressed with a glass. Meningitis can progress very quickly. If you suspect it, call 999 or go straight to A&E — don't wait for the rash to appear.

A message for parents

Sending a child off to university is a milestone — and making sure their vaccinations are up to date is one of the most practical things you can do to keep them safe. Alongside this new MenB offer, it's also worth checking they've had their MenACWY vaccine (which protects against other meningococcal strains and is routinely offered to teenagers). Your pharmacist can talk through what's recommended.

Important: This article is general health information and does not replace individual medical advice. Eligibility for the NHS MenB service follows the official NHS specification. If you have questions about your or your child's vaccinations, speak to a pharmacist or your GP.
